The Martyrdom of the Apostles: Frontispiece is a 1632 by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a crowded scene of suffering and drama. At the center, a man is nailed to a cross while a large group of people—some kneeling, some holding weapons—surrounds him. The sky is dark with swirling clouds and ghostly figures, and the ground is littered with bodies. Below, a stone altar holds a book with Latin text.
