About this work

This painting shows an older man with a long white beard kneeling beside a younger person. The older man wears a red robe over a green tunic and rests his hand on the younger person’s shoulder. The younger person is shirtless, wearing a draped cloth, and looks upward with one hand raised to their head. Behind them, a dimly lit room with a doorway and a stone wall outside glows with a blue-green tint. The older man’s face is lit from below, making his beard and wrinkles stand out sharply. The contrast between light and shadow gives the scene a dramatic feel. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this lighting trick works.
