Overview
Joan Brown's Untitled (1959) is an oil-on-canvas painting, classified as a still life within the contemporary realism movement, characterized by its representational approach.
Subject & Meaning
The painting depicts a blocky, stiff figure with one arm raised against a dark green background. The subject's face is blurred, and the body is composed of stacked shapes, conveying a sense of rigidity.
Technique & Style
Brown employed a prominent impasto technique, applying thick, uneven layers of brown, red, and green paint. The visible, carved brushstrokes and textured surface add a nearly three-dimensional quality to the work.
History & Provenance
Untitled is part of The Museum of Modern Art's collection. As a second-generation artist of the Bay Area Figurative Movement, Brown's work aligns with the movement's emphasis on figurative representation over abstraction.
