Waterfall is a 1681 ink by Melchior Küsel, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a wild, tangled forest with gnarled trees and thick brush. In the center, a waterfall pours down rocky cliffs into a misty pool below. The sky above is stormy, with dark clouds and a few birds flying near the top. The artist used sharp lines to show every twist in the branches and every ripple in the water. The text at the bottom is in German and names the place—though it’s hard to read. Want to see more like this? Check out etching for how artists carve images into metal plates.
