About this work

This print shows two tall, decorated walls filled with small scenes. Each wall has three large panels framed like doors, with smaller panels below. The scenes include people in classical poses—some standing, some sitting, some holding objects. The colors are mostly muted, with touches of gold and dark backgrounds. The walls have ornate borders with patterns and carvings. The bottom of the print lists names like "Palmi" and "Romani," which might be the artists or designers involved. The style looks like it’s copying older, grand architecture. Look up the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more prints like this.

The story of this work

Overview

The engraving depicts two adjacent pilasters from the interior of the Vatican Loggia, one of thirteen detailed plates without a title, printed on paper. It forms part of a series whose title page, engraved by Johann Balzar, presents a full view of the Loggia’s interior and is dedicated to Baron Ermanno de Schubart.
