About this work

This print shows a fancy frame with a woman’s bust at the top, surrounded by swirling leaves and flowers. Below it, two cherubs hold flaming trumpets, while more scrollwork and tiny figures fill the corners. In the center is a smaller scene of a building with columns and a tree, framed like a window. The artist packed in lots of tiny details—look at how the cherubs’ wings and the flames look almost three-dimensional. This style was common in the 1600s for decorative prints. Next, check out etching to see how artists like this made sharp, layered lines.
