This sketch shows a quiet harbor with three small boats tied to a dock. The water is rough, and the boats look ready for a storm. In the background, there’s a row of buildings with spires, maybe a church or town hall. The artist used lots of tiny lines to build up shadows and texture—like a woven pattern. It’s all in black and gray, but the scratching and layering makes it feel almost three-dimensional. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists create depth with lines.
