Woman Reading: Lesson under the Trees (La liseuse: La lecture sous les arbres) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet scene of tall, twisting trees with bare branches and a few scattered leaves. The ground is covered in short, wavy lines that look like grass or water. In the distance, faint hills or a riverbank appear, but no people or animals are visible. The artist used fine, scratchy lines to create texture, especially in the trees and grass. The whole image feels loose and sketchy, like it was drawn quickly. This technique is called etching, drypoint.
Alphonse Legros (French pronunciation: ; 8 May 1837 – 8 December 1911) was a French, later British, painter, etcher, sculptor, and medallist.
