This sketch shows two figures side by side. The one on the left sits on a raised platform, arms crossed, wearing a loose robe. The right figure stands tall, arms outstretched, also in flowing clothing. Both are drawn quickly with pencil and some light color, looking unfinished. The left figure is labeled "St. George" and the right "B.V. Mary." The notes mention these are studies for sculptures in Venice. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shading with lines.
