Egypt and Nubia, Volume III: Dancing Girls at Cairo is a 1849 by Louis Haghe, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a small indoor scene with three men and two women. The two women are dancing—one with her arms raised, the other holding a fan. The men sit on cushions, one playing a stringed instrument, another listening. A third man watches quietly. The room has simple furniture and a curtained doorway in the background. Notice how the artist used light and shadow to show movement, especially in the dancers’ flowing sleeves and skirts. The drawing feels lively but also a bit staged, like a snapshot of a moment rather than a real event. If you like this, check out Romanticism to see how artists used emotion and drama in their work.
Louis Haghe (17 March 1806 – 9 March 1885) was a lithographer and watercolourist from the Netherlands and then the United Kingdom.
