New ABC Booklet: L is a 1627 by Lucas Kilian, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This drawing shows a fancy letter "L" filled with swirling patterns and tiny figures. One cherub floats above, holding a scroll, while another small face peeks out below. The edges are packed with curls, flowers, and crosses, all in black ink on a light background. The scroll and crowns hint this might be part of a decorative alphabet book from the early 1600s. The style looks busy and dramatic, which fits the time period. If you like this kind of intricate design, look up Baroque.
Lucas Kilian (Lucas Kilianus Augustanus; 1579–1637) was a German engraver and etcher from the Kilian family of engravers in Augsburg.
