About this work

This is a black-and-white portrait of a serious-looking man in armor and a ruff collar. His face is round, with a short beard and mustache. The background is plain, but the edges of the picture are decorated with Latin words and small drawings of tools and a ship. The armor looks heavy, and the ruff collar is stiff and starched. The Latin text around the frame praises him, but you don’t need to read it to see he’s meant to look powerful. This is made using engraving, a technique where artists carve into metal plates to create prints.
