About this work

This face is blurry but unmistakable—a man with a bald head and dark eyes, his features softened by smudged lines. The background swirls with wild colors: blues, reds, and greens bleeding into each other like a storm. His mouth is a thin, straight line, almost hidden under a faint blue streak. The artist used pastel on colored paper, which makes the colors look both bright and slightly fuzzy. Pastels are soft sticks of pigment that smear easily, giving this work its dreamy, unfinished feel. Check out pastel to see how artists use this slippery, vibrant medium.
