The Passion: Christ Crowned with Thorns is a 1521 by Lucas van Leyden, a Renaissance work, depicting Lamentation of Christ, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This engraving shows Jesus wearing a crown of thorns. A soldier in armor pokes his side with a stick. Other figures crowd around, some looking angry, others indifferent. Lucas van Leyden made this in 1521 when engravings were brand-new. The lines are sharp and deep, making shadows and muscles pop off the page. You can almost feel the tension in the air. Look for how the artist contrasts light and dark—try chiaroscuro.
Lucas van Leyden (1494 – 8 August 1533), was a Dutch painter and printmaker in engraving and woodcut. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and was a very accomplished engraver.
