The Adoration of the Magi is a 1482 ink by Master I.A.M. of Zwolle, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a group of people gathered around a woman holding a baby. The woman sits on a throne-like chair with a curved back, surrounded by two oxen’s heads at the front. The people around her look serious, some holding objects like a book or a small model building. In the background, there’s a cityscape with towers and a winding road. Notice how the artist used tiny parallel lines to create shadows and textures—this is called cross-hatching. The scene feels crowded but orderly, with every figure carefully placed.
