The Vision of Saint Bernard is a 1524 ink by Dirk Jacobsz Vellert, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows two figures in a richly decorated room. On the left, a woman holds a baby while resting her hand on a book. To the right, a robed man kneels, looking down, with a tall cross behind him. The walls are packed with carvings, arches, and tiny scenes of buildings and people. Notice how the artist used fine lines to create shadows and texture—this is called cross-hatching. The print looks almost three-dimensional despite being just ink on paper.
