Altar of Santa Maria de Taüll

The composition presents a conventional Christian narrative intended for liturgical use, likely illustrating scenes from the life of the Virgin or the Passion of Christ. Such imagery served to educate congregants and reinforce theological concepts within the context of the Santa Maria de Taüll church.

Rendered in tempera on a wooden panel, the altar employs the flat, stylized figures and bold outlines characteristic of Romanesque painting. The limited palette and hierarchical scaling of figures reflect the period’s emphasis on symbolic clarity over naturalistic representation.

Created in the early twelfth century for the church of Santa Maria de Taüll in the Pyrenees, the panel was removed during the 20th‑century dispersal of Catalan Romanesque art. It entered the national museum’s holdings in the mid‑1900s, where it has remained under institutional care.

The altar belongs to a broader program of frescoes and sculpture that once adorned the interior of the Taüll sanctuary, a site noted for its cohesive Romanesque decorative scheme. Its survival offers insight into the visual program that framed worship in the region during the medieval period.
