Menzel employed graphite on a smooth, wove paper surface, allowing for fine line work and subtle tonal variation. Created early in Menzel’s career, the drawing predates his later recognition as a leading German realist. Although the piece remained in private collections for much of the 19th century, it entered public view after Menzel’s knighthood in 1898, when his oeuvre was reassessed by scholars and institutions.
