About this work

This painting shows a crowded room with 13 men sitting around a long table. The man at the center holds a round loaf of bread, and everyone else leans in, talking or gesturing. Behind them, three small landscapes hang on the brick walls, and the floor has green-and-red tiles. Plates, cups, and food sit on the table, but the figures look more like sketches than full portraits. Notice how the artist packed so many people into one space—some even overlap. The background scenes feel like tiny windows to another world. Look up The Cleveland Museum of Art to see this work in person.
