The Small Passion: The Last Supper is a 1510 by Albrecht Dürer, a Renaissance work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a group of 13 men crowded around a table. One man at the center holds a round loaf of bread, while another leans in close, listening. The room looks simple, with a window letting in faint light and a pitcher on the floor. Everyone’s faces are serious, almost tense. Notice how the artist used deep shadows and sharp lines to make the scene dramatic. The faces and hands look almost three-dimensional, even though it’s just a print. Next, look up chiaroscuro to see how this technique works in other art.
Albrecht Dürer spent his life in Nuremberg, a busy German city where artists traded prints like currency.
