Night at Filey, East Riding, Yorkshire, England is a 1924 by Muirhead Bone, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet night scene by the water. Three small boats sit upside-down on a grassy slope, their hulls stacked neatly. In the background, a dimly lit house with a slanted roof stands near the shore, while a horse-drawn carriage waits on a dark road. The whole scene is drawn in rough, dark lines with almost no shading. The artist left the sky and water mostly blank, focusing on the shapes and shadows instead. This makes the scene feel still and mysterious, like a moment frozen in time. Next, check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see this sketch in person.
Sir Muirhead Bone (23 March 1876 – 21 October 1953) was a Scottish etcher and watercolourist who became known for his depiction of industrial and architectural subjects and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars.
