Untitled is a 1730 ink by Okumura Masanobu, a Baroque work, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows three women in long robes and tall hair buns. The woman on the left holds a fan, the middle one carries a tray, and the one on the right holds a parasol. Their clothes have bold patterns—checks, flowers, and stripes—with simple colors like green, black, and cream. Notice how the parasol’s frame is drawn with fine, repeating lines to show its structure. The artist used this trick to make flat paper look like solid objects. Next, look up cross-hatching to see how artists build depth with lines.
