The Poor is a 1905 by Pablo Picasso, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows three people in a dim room. The person on the left sits hunched over, hands clasped. The person in the middle stands tall, facing away, arms crossed. The person on the right is curled up on the floor, head down. The walls and furniture look rough, almost scratched in. The artist used only black and white, making the scene feel dark and urgent. The lines are sharp and uneven, like they were drawn quickly. Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see this sketch in person.
As a struggling artist in the early years of his career, Picasso frequently depicted figures living in poverty or on the margins of society.
