The artist was born in Lipie near Wieluń on 26 July 1846 and died in Warsaw on 31 January 1905. He began his training at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts under Rafał Hadziewicz and later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After returning to Poland, he lived in Warsaw from 1885 to 1894 before moving to Częstochowa, where he worked at the Jasna Góra Monastery and ran his own art school. The painting titled Eve (1889) sparked controversy in Poland for its perceived boldness and was discussed in contemporary publications such as Biesiada Literacka.
