Falls Station, Niagara is a 1910 ink by Joseph Pennell, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a train station built into a rocky cliff. Tracks curve into a tunnel, with a train just entering. Above, a waterfall crashes down the side of the mountain, blending into the station’s rough stone walls. The whole scene feels dark and dramatic, with quick, sketchy lines. The artist used a loose, almost scribbly style to show movement and texture. The train’s smoke and the water’s spray blur together, making the scene feel alive. Want to see more?
