Executed in oil on canvas, the painting employs impressionistic brushwork to convey the lively atmosphere of the venue. Brushwork is loose and visible throughout, with soft, blurred edges and quick, expressive strokes that dissolve forms into atmosphere rather than delineating precise detail. The palette emphasizes the contrast between the bright, warm stage lights catching the dancers and the cool, smoky darkness of the audience space. Light seems to emanate directly from the stage, fading into the auditorium and dissolving the figures of the onlookers into the shadowy environment. A signature appears in the upper right corner of the canvas.

Ricard Canals painted Cafe Concert circa 1903 in Paris. The work eventually entered the collection of Jaume Espona i Brunet before becoming part of the holdings of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, where it remains today under accession number 065624-000. A high-resolution image of the painting was contributed to the Google Art Project and Wikimedia Commons, reflecting its current status as a public domain work in its home institution.

Ricard Canals was a Catalan Impressionist painter, illustrator, and engraver initially associated with the short-lived Saffron Group alongside Isidre Nonell. He began his studies in 1893 at the Escola de la Llotja but left to travel, eventually arriving in Paris with Nonell. There, he held a successful showing at Le Barc de Boutteville, a gallery devoted to young artists, which enabled him to secure Paul Durand-Ruel as an agent and exhibit throughout Europe and the United States. Although many of his Parisian paintings were in a Spanish costumbrista style to appeal to French clients, works like Cafe Concert reveal the influence of Renoir and Degas. During this Parisian period, he also maintained a friendship with Picasso.

The painting endures as a notable example of Canals' Parisian period, demonstrating his synthesis of Catalan modernisme and French Impressionism. Canals returned to Barcelona in 1907 and later served as Chairman of the painting section of the association Les Arts i els Artistes. A major posthumous exhibition of his work was held at the Sala Pares in 1933. Today, Cafe Concert is widely reproduced as a fine art print, appreciated for its vibrant depiction of early twentieth-century cabaret culture and its impressionistic handling of light and movement.
