This painting shows two people in small boats on a calm, grassy river. One sits in the foreground, wearing a hat and a light shirt, holding a long pole. The other stands farther back, also with a pole, near a thatched shelter. The water is dotted with lily pads and white flowers, and the shore has tall reeds and a few trees. The brushstrokes are loose and quick, giving the scene a rough, sketchy feel. The colors are simple—greens, browns, and blues—with light reflecting off the water. Check out the impasto technique for how thick paint creates texture.
