About this work

This is a Kalighat painting of Yama, the Hindu god of death, from 2005. It mixes two styles: patachitra scroll painting around the edges and Kalighat style in the center. The side panels tell Yama’s story in simple black-and-white figures. The middle shows Yama with two demon helpers, painted in bright Kalighat lines. Look up the artist Sahajahan Chitrakar next.

The story of this work

Overview

The artwork is a large rectangular composition that merges patachitra and Kalighat styles, featuring a continuous narrative border in black and white depicting the story of Yama, the Hindu god of death. The central section employs four main colors—blue, green, red, and yellow—and portrays Yama in a kingly form with yellow skin, flanked by two demon henchmen. Unlike traditional depictions, Yama is shown in a gentler aspect, possibly representing Dharmaraja, the judge of the dead. The painting was designed by Ranjit Chitrakar's elder son, with contributions from younger family members.
