Veduta della Piaza di Montecavallo is a 1650 ink by Israël Silvestre, a Baroque work, depicting Palace, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a busy Roman square with grand buildings, statues, and people walking around. The artist etched every line by hand, so each copy is a little different. The shadows make the scene feel three-dimensional, almost like a photo. Israël Silvestre made this in the 1600s. He traveled to Italy and recorded famous spots in detail. His work helped other artists copy Roman architecture. Check out Silvestre, Israël next to see more of these views.
Israel Silvestre (13 August 1621 in Nancy – 11 October 1691 in Paris), called the Younger to distinguish him from his father, was a prolific French draftsman, etcher and print dealer who specialized in topographical views and perspectives of famous buildings.
