摺物帖 『春雨集』 『花鳥六番之内 下野宇都宮』 牡丹に燕|Spring Rain Collection (Harusame shū), vol. 3: Swallows and Peonies is a 1820 ink by Teisai Hokuba, a Romanticism work, depicting Bird, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows two swallows in mid-flight over a branch. One bird is dark with a white belly, while the other is lighter, almost white. Below them, a red peony and a pale flower with green leaves fill the lower half of the image. The artist used bold ink lines and flat colors to create a sense of movement in the birds. The red peony stands out against the softer tones of the flowers and leaves. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists build texture with lines.
