About this work

This painting shows a narrow alley in a city, packed with old buildings. The walls are rough and weathered, with peeling paint in greens, blues, and browns. Windows jut out at odd angles, some open, others closed. A few potted plants sit on ledges, and a door stands slightly ajar in the middle. The rooftops are cluttered with chimneys and pipes, and the sky above is pale and hazy. The brushstrokes are thick and uneven, giving the scene a rough, lived-in feel. This style is called impasto, where paint is laid on thickly so you can almost see the texture. Next, check out technique: impasto to see how artists use thick paint like this.
