Ornamental Vase is a 1504 by Wenzel Jamnitzer I, a Renaissance work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This drawing shows a tall, ornate vase with a wide, flat top and a narrow base. The vase is covered in swirling patterns—leaves, flowers, and strange shapes that look like they’re growing out of each other. The lines are sharp and detailed, almost like lace, with tiny figures and symbols hidden in the design. The vase’s top has a lid with a finial on it, and the sides are packed with repeating motifs that make it look busy but balanced. The artist used only black ink on a light background, which makes the patterns stand out clearly. If you like this kind of intricate design, look up Renaissance.
Wenzel Jamnitzer (sometimes Jamitzer, or Wenzel Gemniczer) (1507/1508 – 19 December 1585) was a Northern Mannerist goldsmith, artist, and printmaker in etching, who worked in Nuremberg.
