About this work

This sketch shows a grand, crumbling building with arches and columns, like an old Roman ruin. Crowds of people in long dresses and hats walk around it, some carrying umbrellas. Trees with tall, thin trunks stand behind the ruins, and the whole scene looks drawn quickly, with loose, sketchy lines. The artist focused on light and shadow to give the ruins depth, even though the drawing is rough. The people seem to be exploring or gathering, adding life to the scene. Check out chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and dark to create drama.
