About this work

This painting shows an older person with a wide smile, wearing a dark blue outfit and a large green turban. A beaded necklace and matching earrings add detail to their clothing. The background is plain, keeping focus on their face and expression. The artist’s signature in the corner reads *Yatanabon*, and the style feels simple but full of character. The colors are flat and bright, with no deep shadows. Next, check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more works like this.

The story of this work

Overview

A watercolour painting on paper by Yatanabon Maung Su from around 1950 shows an elderly woman in traditional Kachin dress, depicted from the chest up and facing forward. The work is signed “Yatanabon Mg Su” and includes an inscription in the lower left corner identifying the subject as a “Sharaw Kachin Old Woman” from Tangyan in the Northern Shan State. The artist, a Burmese painter active from 1903 to 1965, likely created the piece in Yangon during the 1950s.
