First Issue of De Stijl

Publication · 1917

In Leiden, Theo van Doesburg launched a small magazine to carry a large idea: that painting, architecture and design should be rebuilt from horizontals, verticals and primary colors. Piet Mondrian's essays in its pages worked out the theory of Neo-Plasticism issue by issue.

A magazine became a movement: De Stijl's geometry reshaped abstract painting, the Bauhaus curriculum and the look of the modern built world.
