Robert Field, a prominent American miniaturist, was known for his neo-classic portrait style, as seen in works like Portrait of a Lady and miniatures of George Washington. Born in London, he worked in Nova Scotia and was the most professionally trained painter in present-day Canada at the time. His art reflects the influence of Henry Raeburn and Gilbert Stuart.
He remains one of the best American miniaturists of his time, as noted by art historian Daphne Foskett.
