Artium Museum

Artium Museum, formally the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country-Artium Museoa, is a contemporary art museum in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the province of Álava in northern Spain. Opened in 2002, it holds particular significance as a semi-public institution that consolidates a major collection of modern and contemporary art, primarily Spanish and Basque, assembled through selective acquisition dating back to the 1970s. The museum serves as a principal cultural institution for the Basque Country, distinguished by its unusual depth of holdings for an institution with a relatively short history.

The museum emerged from collaboration among the Diputación Foral de Álava, the Basque Government, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, and the Vitoria-Gasteiz city council. The Diputación Foral de Álava, which owned most of the works that would form the permanent collection and held title to the building, was the principal partner. In February 2001, the Fundación ARTIUM de Álava was established to direct and manage the future museum. The institution opened on 26 April 2002. Its governing Patronato comprises the public institutions involved in construction and launch, along with private entities participating through corporate membership programs. A separate Programa de Miembros Asociados offers individual engagement. As of 2022, the curator is Catarina Lozano.

The permanent collection numbers approximately 3,000 works across painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, video, and installation. Its core derives from the Diputación Foral de Álava's holdings, augmented by deposits and donations from private collectors and public institutions. The Fundación Artium approves acquisitions under three criteria: works from historical avant-gardes before 1939; pieces from 1940 to 1990, including additional works by artists already represented and works by Basque and other Spanish artists not yet in the collection; and the most current creation, including young artists with emerging trajectories. The permanent collection is displayed in rotating annual exhibitions that vary their narrative frameworks to explore different possibilities of twentieth-century art. The museum also produces temporary exhibitions, often in collaboration with other Spanish and European museums, and offers educational and cultural programming including film cycles, conferences, seminars, and dance activities.

The collection includes works by major figures such as Miquel Barceló, Joseph Beuys, Joan Brossa, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Eduardo Chillida, Salvador Dalí, Óscar Domínguez, Manolo Millares, Joan Miró, Juan Muñoz, Jorge Oteiza, Pablo Palazuelo, Pablo Picasso, Antonio Saura, Antoni Tàpies, Juan Uslé, and Darío Villalba. Specific titled works include Dalí's Retrato de la Sra. Fagen, Picasso's Mosquetero con pipa, and Guillermo Pérez Villalta's El baño. The museum lobby features the monumental sculpture Un pedazo de cielo cristalizado (A Piece of Crystallized Sky) by Basque artist Javier Pérez, which had been exhibited in the Spanish pavilion at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. In 2007, Vitoria-born artist Anabel Quincoces added the permanent sculptural installation Water Flames (flowing), composed of blown glass pieces, to the museum's antechamber. Outside, the 45-meter iron sculpture La Mirada (2001) by Miquel Navarro stands in the plaza facing Francia Street.

The museum building was designed by architect José Luis Catón and is located in the centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz on Francia Street, bounded by La Paloma, La Esperanza, and Prudencio María Verásteg concessioneer streets. It occupies the former bus station of Vitoria-Gasteiz, organized around and beneath a vast trapezoidal plaza. Approximately three-quarters of the museum lies below street level, earning it the nickname "museum-cellar." To the west, a large white concrete cube contains the main entrance and complementary spaces: the main lobby, auditorium, Sala Plaza, Cube ARTIUM restaurant, ticket office, and cloakroom. A descent of seven meters below ground level leads to the museum antechamber, from which exhibition galleries are accessed. The Sala A0 and Salas A1 and A2 extend beneath the plaza. Sala A3, on an upper floor, has had independent access from the museum plaza since February 2025. Above it rises a grey granite building at surface level containing educational workshops, the library and documentation centre, and administrative services.

Artium Museum is situated in central Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of Álava province in the Basque Country of northern Spain. The institution is owned and operated through the semi-public Fundación ARTIUM de Álava, with the Diputación Foral de Álava holding title to the building and the majority of the permanent collection.
