Established on April 14, 1991, the institution serves as a significant venue for the preservation and exhibition of contemporary art, operating under the management of the Instituto Cultural de Aguascalientes. It is situated within a historic early twentieth-century warehouse, popularly known as 'El Numero Ocho', a name derived from the site's earlier history. The museum holds a broad collection of contemporary art acquired through donations and purchases, and it features six galleries dedicated to various artistic disciplines.

The museum's physical structure predates its cultural function by several decades. The warehouse 'El Numero 8' originally opened in 1918 at the corner of Morelos Street and Primo Verdad. Its name originated from the rural state number 8, which previously occupied the site on Independencia Street, and from the birth date of its owner, Jose de Jesus Rabago, who was born on the eighth day of the eighth month of 1888. Rabago acquired the property, which had been constructed in 1901. The building was partially destroyed by fire in the 1970s and had previously served as a hideout during the Civil War. The Museum of Contemporary Art was officially established in 1991, originally opening at 222 Juan de Montoro Street. It moved to the historic 'El Numero Ocho' warehouse in 1998, coinciding with its hosting of the Young Encounter of Arts exhibition.

The museum's holdings encompass a wide array of contemporary art, preserved and expanded by the Instituto Cultural de Aguascalientes through acquired and donated funds.
