Garage Center for Contemporary Culture

The Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, known until 2014 as the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, is a privately funded institution in Moscow, Russia, dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Founded in 2008 by Dasha Zhukova and Roman Abramovich, it holds the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Russia and functions simultaneously as a gallery, research centre, and public forum for Russian and international culture. The institution opened in June 2008 as the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, taking its name from its first home: the former Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage, a 1926 Constructivist building designed by Konstantin Melnikov. Dasha Zhukova served as the museum's first director, and the opening featured a private performance by British singer Amy Winehouse. In 2009, the museum served as the main venue for the Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, curated by Jean-Hubert Martin, drawing over 100,000 visitors per month during the event. The museum relocated in 2012 to a temporary pavilion in Gorky Park designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, before moving to its permanent location on 12 June 2015. The name changed to Garage Museum of Contemporary Art on 1 May 2014. In December 2020, the museum received the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation for its contributions to promoting Japanese culture in Russia. In June 2024, the museum announced a new collecting focus on contemporary Russian art from the 1980s to the 2020s.
