Ian Potter Centre

The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is an art gallery in Melbourne, Victoria, that houses the Australian portion of the National Gallery of Victoria's collection. Opened in 2003 at Federation Square in the Melbourne central business district, it serves as the primary venue for the NGV's Australian art holdings while the gallery's international works are displayed at NGV International on St Kilda Road. The centre is a legacy of businessman and philanthropist Sir Ian Potter, and its collection of over 20,000 Australian artworks is one of the oldest and most prominent in the country.

The Ian Potter Centre was established in 2003 as a dedicated home for the National Gallery of Victoria's Australian art collection, which had previously been housed alongside international works. The centre takes its name from Sir Ian Potter, a businessman and philanthropist whose bequest enabled its creation. This division of the NGV's holdings between two sites, with Australian art at Federation Square and international art at St Kilda Road, represented a significant reorganization of the state's art infrastructure, allowing the Australian collection to be presented in a purpose-built environment.

The collection encompasses more than 20,000 Australian artworks across multiple media, including paintings, sculpture, prints, photography, fashion, and textiles. It spans from early colonial works through contemporary practice, with particular depth in Australian Impressionism, modernism, post-war art, and Indigenous art. The holdings include significant works by major figures in Australian art history, representing diverse movements and periods. The fashion and textiles component adds a distinctive dimension to the collection beyond traditional fine art categories.

Signature works in the collection include Frederick McCubbin's The pioneer (1904) and Tom Roberts' Shearing the Rams (1890), both foundational images of Australian national identity. The collection also features major works by Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Albert Tucker, Arthur Streeton, John Perceval, Margaret Preston, Bill Henson, Howard Arkley, and Fred Williams. Indigenous art is represented through works by William Barak and Emily Kngwarreye, among others, reflecting the gallery's commitment to presenting both historical and contemporary First Nations practice.

The Ian Potter Centre was designed by Lab Architecture Studio in association with Bates Smart of Melbourne, under the direction of Peter Davidson and Donald Bates. The commission was unusually comprehensive, encompassing not only the building architecture but also gallery interiors, secondary walls, exhibition design for the inaugural hang including wall colours, building identity and a custom graphic typeface, fixtures and fittings, counters, gallery and public furniture, multimedia housings, and retail fit-outs for the gallery shop and Level 3 cafe. This integrated approach earned the architects the RAIA National Award for Interior Architecture and the Marion Mahony Interior Architecture Award.
