Ian Potter Museum of Art

The Ian Potter Museum of Art is the art museum of the University of Melbourne, located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Established in 1972 as the University Gallery, it was renamed the University of Melbourne Museum of Art in 1988 and assumed its present name in 1998 when it moved into a purpose-built structure. After a major reconstruction, it reopened in 2025. The museum stewards the university's extensive art collections and maintains a public exhibition program spanning historical and contemporary art.

The institution began as the University Gallery in 1972, situated on the fourth floor of the East Tower in the Medley Building at the Grattan Street entrance of the university campus. Its founding collections included university portraits from 1880 to 1977, material from archives and the Grainger Museum, and works acquired through commissions, purchases, gifts, and bequests from donors including Dr Joseph Brown, Russell Grimwade, Norman Macgeorge, and Harold Clive Disher, as well as the Norman Lindsay Collection and Leonard Adam Ethnographical Collections. A catalogue of permanent holdings had been published in 1971. In 1975 the gallery relocated to the Old Physics Building on Grattan Street, south of the Union Building, following renovations designed by architect Daryl Jackson that created three exhibition galleries, offices, and storage. Sir John Rothenstein CBE opened the refurbished space in April 1975. In 1988 additional gallery space was created in the former Physics Annexe on Swanston Street, and the institution became known as the University of Melbourne Museum of Art, with the Swanston Street site housing the Ian Potter Gallery and Art Conservation Centre while the Old Physics galleries continued operating. The museum closed in 2018 for renovations and reopened in 2025 with the exhibition 65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art.

The museum's collections encompass the full range of the University of Melbourne's art and historical holdings. From its earliest years, the gallery held university portraits, Classical Antiquities, and Middle Eastern material. The collections grew through diverse channels including commissions, purchases, and significant gifts and bequests. The museum's mandate includes acquisition, maintenance, conservation, cataloguing, exhibition, investigation, interpretation, and promotion of the university's art collections.

The founding collections featured the Norman Lindsay Collection and the Leonard Adam Ethnographical Collections, alongside university portraits spanning 1880 to 1977 and material drawn from university archives and the Grainger Museum. The early holdings were built through the support of notable benefactors including Dr Joseph Brown, Russell Grimwade, Norman Macgeorge, and Harold Clive Disher.

The current building opened in 1998 and was designed by architect Nonda Katsalidis of Katsalidis Architects, with a project team including Bill Krotiris, Adrian Amore, Lisette Agius, Donna Brzezinski, Keiran Boyle, Kei Lu Cheong, Luisa Di Gregorio, Holger Frese, Chris Godsell, Robert Kolak, Barbara Moje, Rainer Strunz, Marius Vogl, and Jackie Wagner. The building was recognised with the Victorian Architecture Medal for project of the year in 1999 by the Australian Institute of Architects, as well as the Melbourne Prize for architecture, cited for its contribution to the public life of the city. The museum closed in 2018 for a major reconstruction and reopened in 2025.
