Museum of Contemporary Art, Andros

The Museum of Contemporary Art Andros is an art museum located in Chora, the capital of Andros island in the Cyclades, Greece. Established in 1979 by shipping magnate Basil Goulandris and his wife Elise through their eponymous foundation, it holds the distinction of being the first museum of contemporary art founded in Greece. The institution serves as the primary exhibition venue for the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation, housing a significant collection of modern and contemporary Greek and international art on an island more commonly associated with maritime heritage than avant-garde culture.

The museum originated from a dual impulse: the sculptor Michalis Tombros, whose family came from Andros, bequeathed a group of his works to the town, and Basil Goulandris, himself born on Andros, sought to establish a permanent venue for contemporary art in his native island. Goulandris financed the initial construction through the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation, while he and his wife contributed additional works from their personal collection of twentieth-century Greek art. The original building, designed by architect Stamos Papadakis, opened on 28 July 1979 on a street that now bears the founders' names, Odos Vasili ke Elizas Goulandri. Its success with the public prompted the foundation to commission a substantial extension, designed by architect Christos Kontovounisios, which was inaugurated on 20 July 1986. This expansion increased exhibition space dramatically and allowed the institution to host annual temporary exhibitions beginning in 1987. The surrounding gardens were designed by landscape architect Miranda Spiliotopoulou-Vazaka. In 1990, the building's design was recognized at the International Garden and Greenery Exposition in Osaka, Japan. The foundation later expanded its presence with a second permanent exhibition space in Athens, which opened in October 2019.

The museum's holdings encompass more than 300 works of modern and contemporary art. The collection is particularly strong in Greek artists of the twentieth century, with significant representation of figures who worked across media and generations. It also includes international modernists, reflecting the cosmopolitan collecting habits of the Goulandris family. The original core combined Tombros's donated sculptures with works from the Goulandris's own acquisitions, creating a collection that spans painting and sculpture with particular attention to postwar Greek abstraction and its international contexts.

Among the Greek artists represented in the collection are Takis, Chryssa, Alekos Fassianos, Jannis Kounellis, Vlassis Caniaris, Psychopedis, and Tetsis. The international holdings include works by Auguste Rodin and Paul Delvaux. A particularly significant piece is L'Araigne I (1946) by Germaine Richier, one of her earliest sculptures to incorporate wire, which exemplifies the museum's acquisition of historically important works of postwar European sculpture. The presence of Michalis Tombros's work remains central to the collection's identity, reflecting the museum's origins.

The museum complex consists of two distinct phases of construction integrated into the Cycladic architectural fabric of Chora. Stamos Papadakis's original 200-square-metre building established a modest but purposeful presence. The 1986 extension by Christos Kontovounisios added 1,000 square metres of exhibition space, allowing for the museum's expanded programming. The complex sits on Theophilos Kairis Square in the heart of Chora, with exterior garden areas designed by Miranda Spiliotopoulou-Vazaka that were integral to the Osaka exposition prize. The materials and siting demonstrate careful attention to local building traditions and environmental integration, characteristics that earned international architectural recognition.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Andros is owned and operated by the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation. It is located in Chora, the principal settlement of Andros, which lies on the eastern coast of the island, one of the largest in the Cyclades archipelago.
