Museum of Contemporary Art of Bogotá

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Bogotá, known by the acronym MAC, is a contemporary art museum located in the Engativá locality of northwestern Bogotá, Colombia. Founded in 1966 and inaugurated on November 25 of that year, it is considered one of the most important museums in the city and the principal museum of Bogotá's northwest. The institution occupies a distinctive purpose-built structure that was the first in Colombia designed exclusively as a museum, and it serves as a meeting point for diverse contemporary manifestations spanning visual arts, sound, performance, electronic, and literary works.

The museum emerged from the social vision of the Minuto de Dios neighborhood, founded eight years prior, where residents worked to build the ideal city that Colombian priest Rafael García Herreros promoted through his radio program El Minuto de Dios. In 1963, García Herreros had publicly called for Colombia to establish a museum, and the formal foundation occurred on August 15, 1966, through the efforts of Germán Ferrer Barrera, a young organizer of workshops in modeling, ceramics, and painting. Ferrer Barrera secured donations of works from prominent artists of the period, and the museum opened on November 25, 1966, in the Colegio Minuto de Dios with 55 works. The current building reached roof closure on July 16, 1970, and was inaugurated by President Misael Pastrana on November 20, 1970. The institution marked its fiftieth anniversary in 2016. In 2009, expansion and renovation of the sculpture collection began in the museum's main square.

The MAC collection has grown from its initial initial holdings of 55 works by 52 artists to approximately 1,600 works of contemporary art. The collection presents a view of contemporary art in Colombia from the 1960s to the present, constantly expanding through new donations. It encompasses works by Colombian artists including Juan Carlos Alonso, César Padilla, Pedro Alcántara, Lina Sinisterra, and David Lozano, alongside international figures such as Abel Azcona, represented by works including Encuentro Biológico and España os pide perdón. The museum organizes ongoing thematic exhibitions that examine genres and tendencies in contemporary artistic practice to promote diverse readings of its holdings. Beyond static display, the museum functions as a space where multiple cultural manifestations converge, contributing to the dissemination and appropriation of local, national, and international contemporary art. The museum also maintains a virtual presence through an adapted version of Google Street View on the Google Arts & Culture platform.

The founding collection of 55 works established the museum's initial profile, assembled through Ferrer Barrera's solicitation of donations from leading artists of the moment. The first Salón de Arte Joven, convened on October 10, 1970, received 180 proposals juried by David Manzur, Augusto Rivera, and Bernardo Salcedo, with 34 artists selected for the final exhibition. The museum's programming of continuous calls for entries and thematic exhibitions generates rotating presentations that revisit its permanent holdings.

The museum building was designed by architects Jairo López and Eduardo del Valle and represents the first structure in Colombia conceived exclusively for museum use. Its spatial concept follows a spiral unfolding around a large central void, with circular walls interrupted to provide access to different galleries. A staircase permits helical circulation across three floors, and the building culminates in a dome through which natural light enters to illuminate the interior. The museum is situated on the Plaza de Banderas of the Minuto de Dios neighborhood, adjacent to the Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios, and forms a single volume with the adjoining theater. In 1971, the building received the national architecture prize for its unique design. Both interior and exterior spaces serve as frequent venues for academic, social, cultural, community, and religious activities.
