Overview
The Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art, Norwegian Museet for samtidskunst, is a museum in Oslo, Norway, dedicated to art produced after World War II. Established in 1988 and opened to the public in 1990, it has formed part of the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design since 2003, functioning as a constituent institution within Norway's largest museum of visual culture.
Founding & history
The museum was established in 1988 with works transferred from the National Gallery of Norway, and it opened in 1990 as a museum for art produced after World War II. In 1992, the National Touring Exhibition, Riksgalleriet, was separated from the museum to become an independent entity. Jan Brockmann served as director from 1988 to 1996, followed by Per Bjarne Boym from 1996 to 2003. The administrative merger with the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in 2003 integrated the institution into a larger national framework while preserving its distinct curatorial focus.
Collection scope
The museum's collection is devoted to art produced after 1945. Its founding holdings derived from works received from the National Gallery of Norway, positioning it as the principal national repository for Norwegian and international contemporary art from the postwar period onward.
Building & site
The museum occupies a building designed by architect Ingvar Hjorth, who lived from 1862 to 1927. The structure was formerly used by Norges Bank, the central bank of Norway, before its conversion to museum use.
