Radishchev Art Museum

The Radishchev Art Museum is a major art museum located in Saratov, Russia. Founded in 1878 by the painter Alexey Bogolyubov and opened to the public on June 29, 1885, it is considered Russia's first major public art museum outside Moscow and St. Petersburg, and the first art museum in the country open to everybody. It predated the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow by seven years and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg by fifteen years. Named after Bogolyubov's grandfather, the 18th-century revolutionary writer Alexander Radishchev, the museum today holds more than 20,000 works and ranks among the largest and most significant institutions of Russian art.

Alexey Bogolyubov established the museum in 1878, naming it after his grandfather Alexander Radishchev, a writer and philosopher whose revolutionary reputation made the choice politically charged. Bogolyubov endured a legal battle with authorities to secure permission for the name. The museum moved into its purpose-built home in 1885, opening to the general public that June. Early support came from significant donors: Emperor Alexander III, the Imperial Academy of Arts, the artist Alexei Harlamov, the celebrated singer Pauline Viardot, and Bogolyubov himself, who contributed his own collection. During the Great Patriotic War, the future Director of the Belarusian National Art Museum, Alena Aladava, worked at the institution.

The collection centers on Russian art of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a permanent exhibition covering Russian painting, graphics, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 15th through the 19th centuries. Holdings encompass paintings by Russian and international artists, graphics, sculpture, icons, books, and manuscripts. The museum is particularly rich in icons and religious objects, and holds Russian incunabula from the 16th century alongside older books. Its holdings of over 200 works by Bogolyubov form a significant nucleus. The geographic and temporal range extends from early Russian religious art through late 19th-century realism and early 20th-century modernism.

The museum holds Martin Ferdinand Quadal's neoclassical painting of the Coronation of Paul I and Maria Feodorovna. Among Russian realists and peredvizhniki, it counts works by Ivan Kramskoy, Vasily Polenov, Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Fyodor Vasilyev, and Vladimir Makovsky. Repin's portraits include depictions of his daughter Nadia and of Stolypin. The collection also features Karl Bryullov, Alexander Ivanov, Nikolai Ge, Alexei Savrasov, Isaak Levitan, Vasily Surikov, Mikhail Vrubel, and Ivan Aivazovsky. Early modernists are represented by Aleksandra Ekster, Pavel Kuznetsov, Aristarkh Lentulov, Robert Falk, Pyotr Konchalovsky, and Martiros Saryan. International holdings include works by Camille Corot, Auguste Rodin, Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Alexander Molinari, Christina Robertson, Mathias Stomer, Pierre-Marie Joseph Vernet, Horace Vernet, and Franz Xaver Winterhalter.

The museum building itself is recognized as one of Saratov's architectural landmarks. It was designed by Ivan Strom, a Russian-German architect, and constructed specifically to house the collection. The edifice was completed in time for the museum's public opening in 1885, giving the institution a purpose-built home from its earliest years.
