Artist

Cui Que

Cui Que is a Song dynasty painting artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Palace Museum.

Cui Que painted delicate still lifes during China’s Northern Song dynasty. His work Lycium Berries and a Quail shows a single bird perched beside a cluster of red berries, each leaf and feather picked out in careful ink and color. The tiny quail is alive in the brushwork, not the pose.

Tap Lycium Berries and a Quail to zoom in and see how the reds cool into gray shadows, a trick that makes the berries feel ripe in your hand.
