Pierre Auguste Cot

Pierre Auguste Cot was born on February 17, 1837, in Bédarieux, a small town in the Hérault region of southern France. He began his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse before moving to Paris, where he entered the studios of Léon Cogniet, Alexandre Cabanel, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. These teachers anchored him firmly in Academic Classicism, and their emphasis on polished draftsmanship and idealized beauty would define his output.

Cot made his Salon debut in 1863 to immediate success, and through the following two decades he became one of the most sought-after portraitists of the Parisian elite. His sitters included members of the aristocracy and the haut bourgeoisie, whose commissions formed the bulk of his painted work. Yet it was two allegorical genre scenes that secured his lasting fame.

In 1873 he exhibited Le Printemps (Springtime) at the Salon, depicting a pair of young lovers on a swing; the picture was so widely copied in engravings, porcelain, and tapestries that it became a commercial phenomenon. Seven years later, at the Salon of 1880, he unveiled L’Orage (The Storm), a dramatic image of a youth and maiden fleeing before a tempest beneath a ballooning scrap of yellow drapery. The painting entered the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1887 through the bequest of Catharine Lorillard Wolfe.

Cot’s career was bolstered by the patronage of the academic sculptor Francisque Duret, whose daughter he married, and by Bouguereau, who remained a lifelong friend and even painted a portrait of Cot’s daughter Gabrielle. Cot received medals at the Salon in 1870 and 1872, and in 1874 he was decorated as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. He died in Paris on August 2, 1883, at the age of forty-six, and was buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery. A commemorative monument was raised in his native Bédarieux in 1892.
