Portrait of Matteo di Giovanni

Matteo di Giovanni is a Sienese School artist. 18 works are cataloged here, principally at Art Institute of Chicago.

A 15th-century Italian painter from the Renaissance era, Matteo di Giovanni’s altarpieces glow with soft golds and deep reds. In *The Dream of Saint Jerome* he places the saint asleep under a tree while a beam of light carries a crowd of saints across the sky. His *Virgin and Child with Saint Sebastian, Saint Francis and Angels* shows the Christ child kicking playfully in Mary’s lap, surrounded by saints with gentle faces. Look closer at the folds in Saint Francis’s robe—they catch the light like real fabric. Next, tap into the *Quattrocento* movement to see more of his contemporaries.
