First generation after Manaku and Nainsukh is the conventional name for a group of Pahari painters active in the Punjab Hills of northern India, chiefly the Guler and Kangra region, from about 1740 to 1830. The group comprises the sons of the celebrated artists Manaku and Nainsukh, including Fattu and Khushala, sons of Manaku, and Kama, Gaudhu, Nikka, and Ranjha, sons of Nainsukh, who carried on the family workshop. Working in the refined idiom developed by Nainsukh, they produced illustrated series such as the Gita Govinda, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Ramayana, noted for lyrical landscapes, delicate line, and emotional expression. Their work is regarded as a high point of Pahari painting.
