Xu Yang was a Chinese painter of the Qing dynasty, active from about 1750 to 1776. A native of Suzhou, he came to imperial notice during the Qianlong Emperor's southern inspection tour of 1751 and was summoned to serve as a court painter in Beijing. He is best known for vast topographical handscrolls that combine traditional Chinese brushwork with Western linear perspective, among them Prosperous Suzhou (1759) and scrolls recording the emperor's southern tours. His densely populated cityscapes document urban and ceremonial life under the high Qing.
